Bearing the Privilege and Burden of Caring for a Loved One with Alzheimer’s Or Dementia

Res•pite: A short period of rest of relief from something difficult or unpleasant.

OASIS Adult Day Services is not just for our participants, although they are our primary focus. While we strive to engage our participants socially, stimulate them intellectually; improve their physical state, empower their independence and be a resource of friendship, affection, fun and love; equally as significant is the support of refreshing, relief and respite we provide to the caregivers.

Caregiver fatigue is a damaging state that dramatically affects the relationship of the family member and the loved one they care for. If left unaddressed both parties suffer from stress, anxiety, resentment and anger. It is a dangerous and potentially detrimental scenario that happens all too often when there is no relief from the daily pressure of being the primary person that shoulders the responsibility of caring for a senior loved one with cognitive disabilities.

Even though many families take great joy in providing care to their loved ones so that they can remain at home, the physical, emotional and financial consequences for the family caregiver can be overwhelming without some support, such as respite. Respite provides a break for the family caregiver, which may prove beneficial to the health of the caregiver and also provides a positive experience for the person receiving care. Respite has been shown to help sustain family caregiver health and well-being, avoid or delay out-of-home placements, and reduce the likelihood of abuse and neglect.
